Structural and magnetic studies of the CeIr5-xAlx and CeIr5-xGax systems

Crystallographic and magnetic studies of the CeIr5-xAlx and CeIr5-xGax systems have been carried out. It was found that iridium in CeIr5 can be replaced by aluminium or gallium preferentially in the intermediate layer of the prototype structure up to CeIr3Al2 and CeIr3Ga2, respectively. Magnetic measurements indicate that the susceptibility of binary CeIr5 is nearly temperature independent, but in the ternary region it follows a Curie-Weiss behaviour. The negative Curie temperatures decrease and the effective magnetic moments increase monotonicall when the content of the substituent increases. The results are compared with some related systems and the valency of cerium is briefly discussed in terms of possible electron transfer and differences in electronegativity.
