High Performance Lightweight Concrete in Bridge Construction
Limiting the water/cement ratio to be less than 0.45, by incorporating various pozzolans combined with a range of superplasticizers, results in higher density of lightweight concrete which is necessary for developing higher compressive strengths. High strength lightweight aggregate concrete (HSLWAC) is a concrete with compressive strength higher than 40 MPa. High performance lightweight aggregate concrete (HPLWAC) is a HSLWAC with improved durability properties. The advantages of using HPLWAC in bridge construction are reduced dead load, crane capacity and transportation costs and reduction in formwork and propping. In this paper state-of-the-art report on HPLWAC mechanical and durability properties is given and the comparison of properties of HPLWAC and normal density concrete (NDC) is presented. Furthermore, the paper gives the detailed overview of several relevant HPLWAC constructions, including bridges, built in last 15 years. According to presented comparison and overview, the possible advanced application of HPLWAC in bridge construction is analyzed, especially for bridge construction in marine environment.
