Comparative analysis of emergent treatment after traumatic injuries of permanent incisors

Aim. The aim of the study was to analyse the time that elapsed between the injury of permanent teeth in children and the presentation for treatment. The adequacy of emergent treatment of dental trauma was also assessed. Methods. The length of time elapsed between the accident and the emergent treatment was analysed in the sample of 581 children (378 boys and 203 girls) coming for treatment to the Department of Paediatric Dentistry, School of Dental Medicine in Zagreb, Croatia. Data were analysed using the SPSS for Windows. Results. The majority of children with complicated crown fractures presented for treatment 3 days after trauma (50%). On the day of injury only 17.5% of children appeared for treatment. About 32.5% of patients came for treatment on the second day after the trauma. Only 46.5% of children with uncomplicated crown fracture presented for treatment on the day or the day after trauma. Adequate dental treatment for this type of injury was given in 87.5% of cases. During the period from 1995 to 2002 significantly more patients were presented for treatment on time than during the period from 1985-1990 (p=0, 005). Adequacy of emergent treatment was also significantly increased. In patients with avulsion of the teeth, on time emergent treatment was performed only in 23%. Time elapsed to treatment after avulsion was significantly shortened during the period from 1995 to 2002 compared to the period from 1985-1990 (p<0, 001). Conclusion. More efforts should be made to increase knowledge and awareness of dental trauma in parents and teachers to improve emergent approach to dental injuries in children. It is also important to increase knowledge of dentists who are responsible for the treatment of children with dental trauma.
