Rehabilitation of Large Arch Bridges
There are six large reinforced concrete arch bridges with spans ranging from 200 m to nearly 400 m: Sibenik, Pag, Krk (two spans), Maslenica and Skradin bridges. While Sibenik, Pag and Krk bridges have been in use for 25-40 years, Maslenica and Skradin bridges were constructed more recently. Over the years many deficiencies and advanced stage of deterioration processes were identified on older bridges. The bridges are located in the Croatian coastal area, where structural degradation is enhanced by aggressive maritime environment with frequent high winds. Subsequently, many repairs were executed. These are not only expensive, but also technically demanding tasks and very difficult to perform. The paper discusses major issues which must be given particular attention in the rehabilitation of reinforced concrete arch bridges, according to the experience gained from Pag bridge renovation and repairs of the Krk bridges.
