TROL Integrates Redox Pathways of Oxygenic Photosynthesis
Thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts catalyze the fundamental process of photosynthetic energy conversion. Various auxiliary proteins linking photosynthesis with physiological responses have recently been identified. Yet, numerousley regulatory elements are still missing and have to be characterized. Apart from linear electron flow, thylakoid membranes perform cyclic electron flow. Very little is known about the components involved in this process. Using functional genomics, we have identified an integral thylakoid membrane protein, TROL, which strongly interacts with the ferredoxin-NAD(P)+ oxidoreductase. Via conserved rhodanese-homology domain, TROL might interact with the chloroplast NAD(P)H dehydrogenase complex, thus integrating two stromal redox pathways with the linear electron flow.
