Antimicrobial Protection of Pretreated Cotton

Current vogue that promotes a healthier and active lifestyle led in last few years to rapid growth of antimicrobial finishes which results in textile material to impart durable freshness and a feeling of safety and wellbeing of consumers. At first glance it seems simple to accomplish if you have good antimicrobial substance, but make it durable in usage is a greater problem. This paper deals with selection of substance for antimicrobial treatment, its bonding to pretreated cotton fabrics and antimicrobial protection that such treated fabrics gives even after washing. For this purpose 100% cotton damask woven fabric of surface mass 150 g/m2 was desized, enzymatically scoured with BioPrep 3000L (Novozymes A/S, Bagsvaerd), mercerized and bleached in industrial condition. Antimicrobial treatment was performed by exhaustion method with different agents (azalide-based compound, cationic and nonionic surfactants). Antimicrobial protection on Gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram negative (Klebsiella pneumoniae) microorganisms was determined by modified AATCC methods (AATCC TM 147-1998 and AATCC TM 100-1999) after treatment, and after washing. Antimicrobial effect of first time applied azalide compound had shown excellent results even after washing process.
