Maturation and discharge of ascospores of Venturia inaequalis (Cke.) Wint. in Croatia
Apple scab is the most important disease of apple in Croatia. For 3 years (1992, 93, 95), the number of lesions on Idared and Golden Delicious leaves were categorized and gathered according to the following scale: A) 1-3 lesions per leaf, B) 3-20 lesions per leaf and C) more than 20 lesions per leaf. These categorized leaves were placed in metal cages and left to overwinter in natural conditions for observation. Ascosporematuration began on March 20th (plus or minus 5 days) and the natural discharge of ascospores occurred after the first heavy rainfall for each year. Leaves categorized as 1-3 lesions produced significantly less pseudothecia than the other two categories and the discharge of ascospores occured in a shorter time period (approx. 4-7 weeks less). There was no significant difference between the production of pseudothecia and ascospore discharge for leaves gathered with 3-20 lesions and leaves with greather than 20 lesions, also there were no significant differences between the two cultivars.
