Tubular Assemblies of Macrocyclic Thialactones
A series of novel macrocyclic (poly)thialactones shows an inclination towards nanotubular self-assemblies. The stacking of rings is governed by weak hydrogen bonds, mainly C-H...O and C-H...S, and van der Waals forces. Sulfur-containing macrocycles can be excellent ligands for complexation of heavy-metal ions, such as Hg^2+, Ag^+, Cd^2+ or Pb^2+. Thus, a series of Ag^+ complexes has been prepared and structuraly characterised. Some compounds, such as 2:1 complex of 2, 5, 8-trithiacyclododecane-1, 9-dione with silver trifluoroacetate, form tubular arrays analogous to those of the free ligand. To find out factors influencing formation of tubular assemblies, Ag^+ salts with complexing (trifluoroacetate) and non-complexing (nitrate and picrate) anions have been used.
