Agricultural Emissions of Greenhouse Gases in Croatia
The Republic of Croatia is a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol. Upon its entering into force and its ratification by Parlament, Croatia shall commit to reduce its emissions of GHG by 5 percent in relation to the reference year, over the commitment period from 2008 to 2012. Agricultural activities contribute directly to emissions of greenhouse gases and are seen as a source with great potential in reducing them. Methane (CH_4) and nitrous oxide (NO_2) are the primary greenhouse gases emitted by agricultural activities. On the basis of the best available activity data, emissions were estimated for the period from 1990 – 2003, in accordance with methodology prescribed by the scientific body of the Convention (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – IPCC).
