New Croatian Highway Structures
Numerous structures currently built on new Croatian highways, offer great opportunity to designers and contractors to explore various solutions and improve the standard bridge building practice. The discussion of several recent major bridge projects in Croatia reveals the variety of structural systems used. The bridges in Croatia are still constructed predominantly in concrete, although many are influenced by the aggressive Adriatic environment. The choice of concrete over steel is still favored, because it enables the use of local resources and is thus cheaper. The construction of the 2.3 km long Peljesac crossing that has just started is a new major challenge for Croatian bridge builders as it is at the moment, already due to its length, one of the greatest engineering undertaking in Europe.
