Possible radiocarbon ^14C Method Application in Paper and Ink Studying
Libby's discovery that the concentration of radioactive isotope ^14C is constant in the Earth's atmosphere set forward a new application of radioactive decay - it could be used for dating of materials that incorporate carbon of atmospheric origin. In the beginning the method was used for dating archeological artifacts and today it is applied also in geology, hydrology, paleoclimatology, geochemical and ecological surveys, biomedicine and forensics. This paper will present the origin and decay of radioactive isotope ^14C, its pathway into the organic and inorganic form, the measurement techniques in studied material, the specific methods of sample preparation and the contamination problems. The possibility of the radiocarbon method application in study of materials in graphic industry, paper and ink, will also be discussed.
