Main Events in the Mesozoic Stratigraphy of the Outer Dinarides
Mesozoic stratigraphy of the Outer (External) Dinarides is the story about the Mesozoic evolution of a huge carbonate platform that has been variously labelled Adriatic, Dinaric, or Adriatic-Dinaric carbonate platform, respectively. We will try to present the Mesozoic history of the Adriatic-Dinaric carbonate platform, which was one of the largest and longest-living carbonate platforms in the geologic record, as a part of the Adriatic (micro-) plate and paleogeographic unity. This unity had its origin (or birth) probably somewhere in the Triassic (or perhaps only in the Lower Jurassic ?), its existence (or life) during the remaining Mesozoic (Jurassic and Cretaceous), and its final demise (or death) in the Eocene. However, this unity was not static, it had its internal dynamic and responded very sensitively to eustatic sea-level changes. Thus the main geodynamic events affected the entire carbonate platform i.e., both the "Adriatic" and the "Dinaric" part of it (e.g. partial drowning in the Late Jurassic, Aptian emersion, Lower Turonian drowning - the Sveti Duh Formation, etc.), producing regional episodes with only minor diferences in various areas. Only in the Late Cretaceous a more pronounced differentiation and incipient desintegration took place, resulting in tilting and partial emersion of individual blocks and, locally formation of intraplatform troughs (e.g. the Dol Formation on Brač Island), whereas in other parts the shallow marine carbonate sedimentation continued into the Tertiary without major breaks. Thus, in the Late Cretaceous we identified the formation of a trough with uninterrupted clastic carbonate sedimentation over the K-T boundary (as distinct from "classic" Paleogene facies with Foraminiferal limestones), which represents a major new geodynamic feature and makes our understanding of the evolution of the Adriatic-Dinaric carbonate platform more complete.
