Plan karakterizacije preferentnih lokacija odlagališta nisko i srednje radioaktivnog otpada u Hrvatskoj

There are a few site characterization principles to be followed: (a) the geological environment, i.e. geosphere, must guarantee the necessary long-term safety without surveillance measures; (b) the geosphere is treated conservatively in safety assessment; it acts primarily as hydrogeological barrier; (c) the aim of site characterization is to identify a suitable site that fulfils requirements imposed by the authorities (law, regulations); and (d) a successful site characterization study is prerequisite for safety assessment and - finally - general repository license. Detailed site investigations foreseen to be done in order to perform a successful site characterization, refer to the following main topics: geomorphology, lithostratigraphy, tectonics, seismicity, rock mechanics, surface-water hydrology, aquifer features and groundwater hydrology, rock and groundwater chemistry, and radionuclide transport modeling. The expected output is a geological data-set for performance analysis. Site investigations to be performed, are expected to apply basic techniques as follows: regional surface work (geological mapping, remote sensing, sample collection, data review), correlation techniques (geochemical, geophysical, mineralogical, petrographical) and regional subsurface work (drilling, deep well studies, coring, age dating). The proposal of site characterisation plan, as elaborated in the paper, is supposed to achieve two basic goals: (a) to put some light on expected site-investigations and additional explorations at candidate sites, and (b) to initiate debate on contents and structure of presented issues in order to improve the final site characterisation plan.
