PIEZO FUEL INJECTION IN MODERN ENGINES
Due to increasing demands upon Internal Combustion Engines, primarily concerning the exhaust gas emission, fuel injection systems development is intensive. One of the more recent technologies of fuel injection is the Common Rail system used on Diesel engines and direct fuel injection used on Otto engines. In both cases the injector has a significant role in the fuel injection system. Piezo based injectors are the main feature of the next generation of fuel injection systems. Application of the aforementioned principle is an important step forward in modern engine development. The paper deals with the principles of piezo injection ; its advantages and disadvantages, when compared to earlier injection solutions and the future of this technology. Practical solutions, both for Diesel and Otto engines, are reviewed, with an accent on the piezo injector.
