Urgent colorectal treatment in University Hospital Dubrava
We have performed a retrospective analysis on patients who were operated for colorectal cancer within last six years at the Department of Abdominal surgery in University Hospital Dubrava. The aim of this study was to compare age, gender, the reason for urgent surgery, and Dukes classification in this group as opposed to patients undergoing elective surgery for the same condition at hte same center in the same period. In the period from 1.1.2000.-31.12.2005. at the University Hospital Dubrava, 642 patients were operated for colorectal cancer. Emergency operation was performed in 20% of the patients. Obstruction was the most common indication for urgent operation. Other indications were perforation and bleeding. We have analyzed patients in respect to age, gender, tumor site and Dukes classification. We also describe the types of operations performed, postoperative morbidity and mortality. Infection of laparotomy incision was the most common complication. We conlude that the group of patients undergoing emergency surgery had a more advanced colorectal cancer according to the Dukes classification than the group of elective cases. We also noted an increased morbidity and mortality amongst the patients undergoing emergency surgery.
