Rectal carcinoma - 6 years study
Colorectal cancer is the most common cancer in population and its occurence in the rectal part of the colon is very frequent. In this paper we have analyzed a six-year years experience in treatment of rectal cancer in our hospital, Department of Abdominal Surgery, University Hospital Dubrava, Zagreb. We have retrospectively examined a large group of patients surgically treated from January 1st, 2000 till December 31st, 2005. Total number of patients with colorectal cancer is 642 more than 1/3 of which have been diagnosed with rectal cancer. We have analyzed all the epidemiological (age, sex)and pathological data (Dukes classification, distance from anocutaneous line) including the surgical technique performed i.e. type of operation along with patients morbidity and mortality. We have also attempted to establish some clinical parameters in prognosis of survival and correlation between clinical nad pathological findings as well as possible methods of treatment implying the type of operation being performed. We will compare our results with modern treatment of the same disease in the world. This work will, hopefully, present our position in uring the rectal carcinoma and provide us with establishing further guidelines and algorithms regarding the issue.
