Trends in rectal cancer treatment in University hospital Dubrava

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the world. It is also the third cancer in the world concerning global mortality. Rectum is still one of the most frequent sites of colorectal cancer origin. The method of rectal cancer treatment has in the last years undergone significant changes. Anterior resection is carried out with increasing frequency even in cases of lower rectal cancer. It has been established that abdominoperineal resection can be avoided even if the cancer is less then 6 cm from anal verge, without compromising the oncologic principles. On the other hand, owing to the development of minimally invasive surgery, laparoscopic rectal anterior resection with total mesorectal excision has been established as a safe procedure, with long-term survival comparable to open procedure. Our goal was to assess the changes in rectal cancer treatment in our hospital. We retrospectively collected data for the patients with rectal cancer operated within the last 6 years. The patients were divided into two groups: group operated during 2000 and 2001, and group operated during 2004 and 2005. We compared those groups of patients, particularly in terms of percentage of anterior resections performed for low rectal cancer, rectal cancer staging and additional parameters, such as total mesorectal excision and laparoscopic approach
