Mechanical properties of fibre reinforced polyurethane composites
The feasibility of using urethane matrix resins for composites, and the effect of three types of reinforcements (E-glass, S-glass and carbon fibres) on the mechanical properties of polyurethane composites was studied. The mechanical properties of the composites depended primarily on the type of fibres and their intrinsic mechanical strength. Tensile strength of carbon fibre reinforced composites was above 700 MPa vs. compared to 400 MPa for S-glass reinforced and approximately 280 MPa for E-glass reinforced composites. The flexural moduli for carbon fibres, S-glass, and E-glass were about 42 GPa, 34 GPa and 27 Gpa, respectively. The polyurethane composites can be utilised for the rapid fabrication of products that can be used in different areas such as the automotive or aircraft industry. The composites based on polyurethane resin reinforced with S-glass and Carbon fibres meets the avionics industry requirements for the aircraft parts subjected to moderate temperatures and stresses.
