Sažetak
The MA thesis is a comparative analysis of the two existing Croatian translations of Ulysses by Zlatko Gorjan (1957) and Luko Paljetak (1989 published in 1991). It is focused on the way literary allusions in the novel are rendered in these translations. It also discusses the literary and historical context when the translations were published, the issue of literary reception and the interaction of these translations with the translations of other works Joyce alludes to in Ulysses rendered into Croatian. The annotation of a large corpus of literary allusions in the two Croatian translations of Ulysses has been undertaken based on the existing annotations of the novel in English, from which a number of examples have been selected for discussion by comparative and contrastive analysis. The analysis draws on close reading and deals with linguistic, stylistic and cultural issues related to the translation equivalence. The approach to the analysis is descriptive. In some examples the Croatian translations are compared with the French translation by Auguste Morel and the Italian translation by Giulio de Angelis. The Annex of the thesis consists of annotations and commentaries on literary allusions in Telemachia. The methodology of annotation is also discussed. The thesis points out the need for an annotated edition of Ulysses in Croatia.
