Experimental and Numerical Analysis of Bending Stress Field in Welded Joints
Determination of S-N curves in a case of welded joints is usually connected with the problem of stress definition. Irregular shape of weld and stress concentration disable the appropriate stress measurement, and the Finite Elements Method is faced with high stress gradient in weld toe area that requires mesh refinement and experimental verification. For practical stress definition, three main approaches are proposed: a)Nominal stress concept (stress is defined by simple beam theory (s = F/A or s = Ms/W), without taking into account the stress concentration, b)Hot-Spot Concept, that takes into account only the stress concentration caused by shape of the component, c)Peak Notch Concept, that takes into account the concentration caused by shape of the component as also the stress concentration caused by weld toe shape. The aim of this paper is to compare experimental results and results obtained by FEM, in order to propose the stress definition that is most suitable for practical purpose.
