Numerical Analysis of Surface Crack Growth

ABSTRACT: The fatigue crack growth in butt welded joint subjected to amplitude loading is considered. Fracture mechanics K - concept applied to semi - elliptical surface crack and Paris law are used for fatigue life prediction. The influence of weld reinforcement and undercut are analysed. Finite Elements Method is used to determine local stress distribution in weld reinforcement area. Cycle-by-cycle simulation method is proposed for fatigue life prediction, if direct integration of Paris equation is not possible. Obtained results, comparison to literature and discussion are presented.
