Correlation of leaf area and corn yield on Vinkovci area

Leaf area index (LAI) significantly affected grain yield. The correlation was represented by high correlation coefficients for both years (R=0.9285** in the first and R=0.9424** in the second investigation year). As for the average for all investigation variants, LAI was by 0,95 higher in the second investigation year in relation to the previous year in which Lai value was 3,08 for all variants in the experiment. The highest LAI values were obtained in the two year investigation in the thickest stands and at nitrogen fertilization of 270 kg/ha (4,170-4,382 and 5,225-5,363). LAI values in the stand of 60.000 plants/ha were from 2,61-3,2 in the first and 3,5-4,21 in the second year when optimum leaf area sufficient for optimum yield achieving (3,5-4) was obtained.By leaf area increase in the stand of 80.000 plants/ha grain yield was significantly higher and in constelation with increasing amounts of nitrogen (180 kg/ha) and favourable climatic conditions, especially in 1994. By nitrogen fertilization leaf area was almost proportionally increasing until the application of 270 kg/ha of nitrogen. It means that this increase was 0,244 and 0,151 in the first and o,177 and 0,223 in the second investigation year. By a stand increase to 60.000 plants/ha LAI was significantly higher (by 21 i.e. 26,5% in the first and 17,5 i.e. 24,3% in the second investigation year) which significantly affected grain yield.
