The comparison of complete genomes of measles viruses isolated from patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis to corresponding wild type viruses

Measles virus gene sequences, obtained from material extracted post mortem from the brain of the patients were, except from mutations accumulated in certain regions of the genome, homologous to the corresponding gene sequences of genotypes circulating at the time of primary exposure of the patients to MV and not to those circulating at the time of onset of symptoms. In this work were for the first time determined and compared complete genomes of two wt MV strains and two SSPE MV strains, belonging to he same genotype. In addition to known mutations, the analysis identified new ones which could also have influence on MV persistency in CNS. The newly recognized mutations are placed in functionally characterized parts of coding as well as non-coding regions which so far received less attention. Taken together, our study has significance for further analysis of influence of mutations on establishment and maintenance of chronic progressive CNS disease caused by MV persistency.
