Mechanical Recycling of Photo-oxidized LDPE/LLDPE Film

The practice of polymer recycling is continuously growing to minimize polymer waste and ensure environmental protection. However, the mechanical properties, durability and aesthetics of recycled material must not be lost in order to be acceptable for further use. In the present work the recycling of the LDPE/LLDPE greenhouses film was studied. Such type of film is used for outdoor applications and it must have good UV and thermal stability. For that reason films were photo-oxidized in artificial accelerated ageing conditions (UV and thermal degradation) in different time intervals (2, 6, 10, 12, 14, 15 and 20 days) and then they have been melt reprocessed with or without stabilizer. The extent of degradation and quality of studied material before and after recycling was studied by determination of mechanical properties (tensile strength, elongation at break), melt flow rate (MFR), yellowing index and FT-IR analysis. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis was carried out to follow the crystallinity of the non-stabilized and stabilized recycled material. The results show that LDPE/LLDPE film show good stability to photo-oxidation and that the material still has relatively good properties after recycling process. The mechanical properties of non-stabilized material were decreased in comparison to stabilized material as result of photo-oxidative degradation.
