The influence of soil properties and herbicides application on sugarbeet yield and quality.

: Sugarbeet trials were set up during 2002-03 on 2 soil types: Stagnic Luvisol and Dystric Cambisol. The soils showed acid environment response (pHKCl 4.9-5.4) and low humus content (1.3-1.6%). The trial aimed to investigate the possibility of using 30 t/ha carbocalc (CC), pressed saturated silt (30% CaO), and 40 t/ha manure in the amendment of already determined unfavourable soil properties as well as the influence of obtained changes in weed control, sugarbeet yield and quality. The weeds were controlled once with full-dose herbicides, repeated low-doses and by hoeing. Weed type, number and weight were determined on 1 m2 in the second decade of July. CC application increased the pHKCl to 7.12-7.18, whereas manure application increased the humus content to 1.73-1.95%. The weeds prevailed were: Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Polygonum persicaria, Amaranthus retroflexus and Echinochloa crus- galli. The total number of weeds without herbicide application was, on average, 83.2/m2 and the weight was 4012 g. Hoeing decreased the weed number to 2.9/m2 and weight to 111 g. Repeated herbicide application decreased the weed number to 6.3/m2 and weight to 294 g, whereas the worst results of weed control were obtained from the herbicide control variant, recording 9.1 weeds/m2 and weight of 534 g. Repeated application of low-dose herbicides resulted in higher root yield (48.5 t/ha) compared to application once with full-dose herbicides (45.1 t/ha). Hoeing recorded the highest root (50.8 t/ha) and sugar yield (6.2 t/ha). Root yield was very significantly, and sugar yield was significantly, increased by CC application compared to the control..
