Survey of magnesium status inheritance in corn plants

Normal (Osijek eutric cambisol) and stress (strong K-fixation and oversuppy of Mg in Posavina gleysol) soils were used for testing of corn genotypes. Their nutritional status were estimated by ear-leaf analysis. Also, ameliorative rates of potash were used for normalization of crops yields and K and Mg contents. By testing of corn genotypes in Osijek cambisol, seven hybrids of Os64 female parent had considerably higher plant Mg (mean 0.49% Mg) compared to seven hybrids of C103 female parent (mean 0.19% Mg) and these properties were in close connection with Mg status in their parents. Also, 12 hybrids of Os84-19 parent had the higher plant Mg status than 12 hybrids of Os84-35 parent (means 0.37 and 0.56% Mg, respectively) in accordance with Mg status in their parents (0.20 and 0.63% Mg, respectively). The Os77-9 parent was characterized by higher plant Mg (0.76% Mg) in comparison with remaining five parents tested (mean 0.38% Mg). However, in these studies, plant Mg status and grain yields were in low connection. Under stress conditions, seven hybrids of Os1-48 parent had low percentage of stalk lodging at maturity stage (mean 5% only) and higher grain yields (mean 5.64 t/ha) compared to seven hybrids of Os87-24 parent (59% and 4.16 t/ha, respectively). OsSK377 and OsSK382 corn hybrids could be designated as more tolerant to soil stress because their yields (mean 2.31 t/ha) were higher in comparison with remaining four hybrids (mean 1.60 t/ha). Their plant Mg were in range from 0.92 to 1.16% Mg (oversupply) and plant K from 0.26 to 0.38% K (acute K deficiency). We recommend application of ameliorative rates of potash for normalization of Mg and K nutritional status in soil and plants. Also, by growing of suitable genotypes is possible to alleviate soil stress induced by K and Mg inbalances and antagonism.
