Distribution and spread of 51Cr labeled leukemia cells in mice
Cells of two transplantable murine leukemias, a lymphoid and a myeloid one, were labeled with 51Cr in vitro and injected into histocompatible recipients. The amount of radioactivity was monitored in animals sacrificed every other day, until all the remaining animals had died with leukemia. The following organs were examined: spleen, lymph nodes, thymus and femur ; liver, lungs, kidney and brain ; and the blood. Throughout the period of observation, most of the activity was recovered in the liver (25 to 50% of the injected amount), spleen (5 to 15%), and blood (5 to 10%). Other organs each contained 1 to 3% or less, except thymus and brain, which remained essentially free of the label. As compared with cells from normal spleens, cells from both leukemias had higher affinity for liver and lower affinity for spleen and lymph nodes. Cells of lymphoid leukemia tended to remain circulating in the blood, whereas those of myeloid leukemia were sequestered extravascularly.
