Sažetak
European Union leads its competitiveness to the companies based on knowledge. Today's competitive environment results with the fact that companies should constantly monitor and follow its strategic position. Knowledge and skills are important factors for European industry when it deals with the world competitors. In order to compete, new technologies created by University and science-research institutions should be implemented into practice through foundation of knowledge based companies. Recent researches show that companies based on knowledge are successful new forms of entrepreneurship with positive influence on competitiveness, innovations (including the results of R&D, growth and employment), and also have positive effects on socio-economical environment. European universities have involved into this process and represent one of its foundations. Experiences of Croatian Universities in this area are very poor. In general, there is no systematic stimulation for creating companies based on knowledge, even though they could be the result of University's researches. The identical situation is at the University of Rijeka where still does not exist the stimulating system of implementation the scientific researches into practice. Public interest, presented by the University, is confronted with the problem of insufficient and inadequate policies which should make the transfer of knowledge into practice possible.
