Influence of fluorescent whitening agents on ultraviolet protection of pretreated cotton

In addition to some beneficial effects of UV radiation on skin this radiation may cause skin damage such as sunburn, allergies, skin aging and even skin cancer especially during the summer time. It is well known that garment provides some UV protection, but in most cases there are not enough its sun screening properties. Compared with visible light that interacts with dyes, UV radiation interacts with ultraviolet absorbers and fluorescent whitening agents (FWA), as well. To prevent harmful UV rays transmission, fabrics can be treated with different UV absorbers. In this paper the influence of FWA on UV protection of pretreated cotton fabric was investigated. For the purpose of better adsorption property cotton fabric was pretreated during mercerization with cationic compound following by chemical and optical bleaching and finally by treatment with UV absorber. Additionally, the influence of cotton pretreatments on its mechanical properties was investigated.
