Imunocompetence in patients with malignant tumors of the head and neck
Controversial data can be found in literature concerning the role of immunological mechanisms in the growth and spread of cancer. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine whether changes exist in immune responsiveness in patients with malignant tumors of the head and neck. The immune reactivity was assessed by the ability of peripheral blood lymphocytes to respond to Phytohemagglutinin (PHA), Concanavalin A (Con-A) and Pokeweed mitogen (PWM). The responses to all three mitogens were significantly lower in patients with recurrent tumors in comparison to stage I and II. The results presented indicate a decrease of immunological function in cancer patients.
