Project Croatian Solar House

Consumption of energy in Croatia is highly above the energy production from domestic sources, which leads to dependence on imports and insecurity of safe energy supply. In addition, too large emission of CO2 in Croatia results in breaking limits of Kyoto agreement. In 2001 the R. Boskovic Institute and four Zagreb faculties launched an ambitious energy-conservation-ecological project Croatian Solar House (CSH), and in 2002 the Fisibility study was completed. General objective of this project is to construct the test and demonstration object CHS, containing original scientific/technical solar products. The building is designed according to 'passive house' principles. For water heating a new type of hybrid PV/Thermal collector was produced. It has a semi -transparent a-Si:H solar module deposited on glass which is the cover of the building-integrated conventional solar thermal collector. For solar production of electricity at CSH the original, 4th generation a-Si:H solar cells are designed, having degradation in exploitation of less than 10%. Although the object will be grid-connected, an additional hydrogen system, containing PV production of hydrogen, its storage and fuel cell for reverting it back to electricity is also included into the project. The CSH project offers a number of original scientific (technological) solutions regarding reduction of heating demands of households and in solar production of energy. The project is expected to make a significant impact in Croatia, raising awareness for sustainable development and utilization of clean renewables, and in the same time helping the Croatian industries to enter new attractive fields.
