Potention of immune response by pregnancy in rats
A mammalian fetus has the position of an allograft in te maternal organism. As a rule the fetus is well tolerated and does not appear to be subnited to the rejection process. The present study was undertaken to illustrate that maternal sensitization could be proved by experiments in vivo. From the experiments presented it is clear that the sensitizing capacity of fetal tissue is on the level of adult tissue. This conclusion relates to both cellular and humoral immunity. However, fetal antigens during pregnancy could be preented to the maternal immune system in a form that promotes a facilitation reaction rather than a rejection reaction.
