VAULT WALL MODEL TESTING DURING RECONSTRUCTION OF THE OLD BRIDGE IN MOSTAR
The mortar in vault joints is subjected to the triaxial state of stress. Consequently, a realistic insight into its hardening and deformation patterns can only be obtained by means of an appropriate model testing. The preparation and testing procedure for two types of models made of original materials used for bridge vault construction, is presented in the paper. The modelloading time sequence and mortar curing requirements were strictly respected and hence a highly realistic simulation of the masonry vault construction process was obtained. Resuits obtained by model testing provided the following information : . required bracing force for last row of stone blocks in vault crown, . necessary vault camber, and scaffold release time, and . final confined compression strength of mortar in joints. A satisfactory correspondence of resu Its was obtained by comparison of calculated and experimental values.
