MAINTENANCE OF LARGE CONCRETE ARCH BRIDGES
There are six large reinforced concrete arch bridges on Croatian Adriatic coast. They were erected utilising the free cantilevering method, in segments. The method consists of constructing two half arches from the abutments, retained by temporary stays.Segments can be prefabricated, or concreted with travelling formwork. Four arch bridges were built in the period from 1965 to 1980 (the Šibenik bridge, the Pag bridge and the Krk bridge, comprising two arches). These bridges were designed and built in accordance with the regulations in force in late 1960"s and they exhibit some common characteristics ; minimim dimensions of structural elements and a thin concrete cover, neglecting the environmental influences. Another two new arch bridges were designed and built according to the experience gained by in-situ investigations of older arch bridges and ENV 206.The new Maslenica highway bridge was completed in 1997, while Skradin bridge over the Krk river canyon shall be completed by the end of 2004. Their design has taken into the account severity of the aggressive marine environment. Dimensions of structural element were increased in order to avoid reinforcement congestion and to increase durability.Structural details and cross sections were simplified in order to minimise execution problems.
