Croatian North- Adriatic ports: passengers traffic and environmental protection

From ancient times, Adriatic basin was territories of intensive maritime traffic, using which inhabitants living on the seashore, have exchanged agricultural products and foodstuffs. At the same time different cultures and customs were mixing together. Wars aimed to spread political influence on new land, additionally contributed to permanent interaction of living habits, knowledge and traffic connections. Owing to turbulent history and border changes, Adriatic shore, especially its eastern part is rich in cultural and historical monuments, which present masterpieces of architecture, art of painting and sculpture and literature. Unique historical monuments mix with natural beauty, preserved nature and mild climate. Therefore it is understandable why first steps in tourism development on eastern Adriatic coast, in places like Opatija, Dubrovnik, Hvar and Korčula, took place in second half of 19thcentury. Sojourn in this places were considered as privilege of rich people and demonstration of the social status. Relatively small share of maritime traffic in total world tourism flows of 7.8 per cent, in comparison with 43.7 per cent of air traffic and 41.4 per cent of road traffic, indicates very modest role of this traffic branch in world’ s tourism. Maritime traffic produces services whose characteristics considerably differ from air and road traffic services, which dispose of high speed, comfort, flexibility and distant destinations accessibility. The role of maritime traffic, because of low speed and specific transport process organisation, is not likely to be the base of emitive market and tourist destination connecting. This function maritime traffic can perform only together with other traffic branches, mainly road traffic in order to organise passengers` traffic chains. This led to dynamic development of ferry traffic which today represents the only way of connection between islands and land, as well between parts of land in order to link their road networks in a shorter way. Beside liner maritime passengers traffic, the second mode of extreme importance in tourism market are cruising journeys, which represent a mixture of high quality traffic service and a large scale of different tourists` services.
