Relationship between parenting style and emotional intelligence in adolescents
The goal of the present study was to explore the relationship between parenting style and self-perceived emotional intelligence in adolescents. Parenting style was studied within the Parental acceptance-rejection theory (Rohner, 1984), with an added dimension of Parental control. Assessment of parental acceptance included: perceived warmth and affection, hostility and aggression, indifference and neglect and undifferentiated rejection. Assessment of Parental control included: perceived settings of strict rules, restrictiveness, invasion of privacy and surveillance. Self-perceived emotional intelligence measured with shorter version of the Questionnaire of Emotional Intelligence (Taksic, 1998.) was adapted (Delale, 2001) and included: recognition of other’ s emotions, recognition of one’ s own emotions, regulation of Emotions and Openness to emotions. Study participants were 675 high school freshmen from Zagreb, Croatia (298 females and 377 males) Parental style was predictive of 4-19% of variance in self-perceived emotional intelligence, with the most successful prediction for regulation of emotion. Significant differences were found when parental style variables referred to mother or father (10% explained variance when mother’ s parenting style perceived by girls was a predictor and 19% when father’ s parenting style was a predictor). Most successful individual predictors were parental surveillance and invasion of privacy. The least successful prediction was for recognition of one’ s own emotions.
