Poultry production in Croatia - current state and perspectives

Industrial development of poultry farming in Croatia started in 1961, when the first modern farms in the public sector were built. Until then the poultry farming conducted on individual farms was without any control. In the year 1961 there was 7.01 million poultry in all, 96.53% of which were reared on private farms. From 1961 to 1990 the poultry production in Croatia rapidly increased, so that in 1991 there was 17.10 million poultry. In the year 2000 number of poultry in Croatia was 11.25 million in all, 61.4% of which belonged to private farms and 38.6% to former public sector. It is estimated that in the total number of poultry, chickens have a portion of 93%, turkeys 2%, ducks 2% and geese 3%. The portion of other poultry species such as guinea fowls, quails, pheasants and pigeons, is in the total number of poultry without significance. The poultry slaughtering in the period 1991- 2000 was reduced from 30.51 million to 20.47 million pieces, and the average weight of processed poultry increased from 1.5 to 1.7 kilograms. In the same period the egg production was reduced from 885 million to 774 million. In the year 2000 the average consumption of poultry was 19.70 kg per household member, which makes 30.45% in the total consumption of meat and meat products. The consumption of eggs and powdered eggs was 9.32 kg per household member. Lately, the import of different chicken hybrids (Hybro, Ross, Cobb, Arbor Acres, Avian, Sasso, as well as Lohmann Brown, Issa Brown, Shaver and Hissex) has been made possible.
