The development of Split under the influence of in-migration
The paper deals with the problems of demographic development in Split, focusing on the role of in-migration in the demographic development and regional planning of the city as well as on the emerging of housing estates. Industrialization after the Second World War had a decisive impact on the economic and demographic development of the city. This process attracted a large number of in-migrants from the neighbouring islands, from Zagora (i.e. the Dalmatian Hinterland) and from other parts of Dalmatia. Parallel with the intensive in-migration, a regional spreading of Split took place resulting for the most part from a socially directed building of collective estates. At the same time the estates of individual construction, partly without control, arose at the outskirts of the town. In the 1990s this uncontrolled construction developed into a prevailing factor of the town spreading. A new uncontrolled development od the Split housing estates has brought to the environment devastation and intensification od economic and social problems of the city.
