Oscillations in Bulb Type Hydropower Unit

During the full load operation of the bulb type generator in HPP Dubrava in Croatia the problem of power oscillations occurs. It is particularly emphasized on one of the two generators where the oscillation is observable on the instruments in the command room. The frequency of power oscillation is 2, 083 Hz which is the same as the rotor speed frequency. The research methodology of the cause of phenomenon and the partial results of specialized measurements are presented in the paper. The principle of determination of the rotor moment of inertia for both units, as the most important parameter for defining the natural frequency of electromechanical oscillations, is also presented. According to the results, as it was expected in theory, the natural frequency depends on the working conditions. At full active power and small or negative reactive power, the natural frequency of electromechanical oscillations becomes smaller and is very close to the rotor speed frequency. Finally, the possible solutions to the problem are considered.
