Water Resources and Sedimentation Process in Ports
This paper deals with the problematics of sea port and port facility construction as well as with acquiring necessary space (depth) in port aquatoriums at locations near river mouths. Strongest negative effects of river mouths on ports are sedimentation processes which cause reduction of depth which affects navigability as well as port foundations and construction of new port facilities. In this paper three northern Adriatic Croatian ports are mentioned as examples ; Rijeka, Raša and Plomin, in order to demonstrate the correlation between fresh water environment (fresh water from rivers Rječina, Raša and Boljunčica) and aforementioned ports in the context of present sedimentation processes. By demonstration and elaboration of these examples this paper stresses the significance of reviewing the problematics of sedimentation deposits in port aquatoriums if they are located in close proximity to river mouths. It points out the problem of current port area expansion at locations with recent deposits and recommends methods for monitoring, planning and implementation of activities associated with mentioned problematics which should be taken into account when coping with complex planning of such ports.
