Signal transduction induced by opioids in immune cells: a review
New data regarding signal transduction in cells of the immune system are reviewed. The signal transduction in neuronal cells is documented. Similar signaling pathways are induced by opioids in cells of the immune system like in neuronal cells. New data regarding cAMP, PKC and intracellular calcium levels induced by opioids in cells of the immune system are presented. Met-enkephalin, a  -opioid, bimodally regulated, while  -opioids inhibited these second messengers.   ,  - and  -opioids altered NO secretion, inducing cGMP, the second messenger in cells of the immune system. Coupling of opioids to opioid receptors triggered downstream signaling, activation of MAP/ERK kinases and transcription factors in cells of the immune system. Downstream signalling and transcription induced by opioids in cells of the immune system are described in this review.
