Screening of Seventy Medicinal Plant Extracts for Antioxidant Capacity and Total Phenols
High level of free radicals or reactive oxygen species create oxidative stress, which leads to variety of biochemical and phisiological lesions and often results in metabolic impairment and cell death. A general recommendation to the consumer is to increase the intake of foods rich in antioxidant compounds (e.g. polyphenols, carotenoids) due to their well-known healthy effects. As a consequence there is a great interest in the identification of new sources of natural antioxidants. The aim of the present study is to determine the phenolic content of seventy medicinal plant infusions and relate this content to their antioxidant capacities. Samples of medicinal plants were purchased at a local pharmacy. Aqueous extracts-infusions were prepared from each dried plant, extraction time was 30 minutes. The extract was filtered and the liquid portion was tested. The antioxidant capacity was estimated by FRAP assay and total phenols were measured by Folin-Ciocalteu assay. The FRAP of medicinal plant extracts range from 0.06 to 20 mM/L. The total phenolic content range from 9 to 1600 mg/L.
