Method for the determination of carbonate by the introduction of CO2 into an inductively coupled plasma
The inductively coupled plasma (ICP) has been proved to be a good excitation source for multielement analysis of solutions by atomic emission spectrometry (AES). Superior detection limits, a large linear dynamic range and relative freedom from matrix or inter-element effects are the mostly quoted ICP advantage [l- 5]. Lines of carbon belong to a group of analytically “weak” lines of the ICP emission spectrum. To reach satisfactory detection limits, relatively high concentrations of carbon are necessary ; and it is impossible to detect low carbon concentrations if the sample is introduced into the plasma as aerosol.
