Cartoons and Prejudice in Central and South Eastern Europe
The dissertation explores the role of satirical press - caricature and cartoons in particular - in the origins, evolution and perpetuation of prejudices between the nations of the ex Austro-Hungarian Empire. Special emphasis is put on material issued during the 19th century in former Yugoslav countries, but focus is also given to the migration of symbols from nation to nation, as well as centre to province, as identical forms of stereotyping and derision appear in patterns throughout the region. The dissertation also looks at the reinvention of 'ancient' symbols in the late 20th century.
