Linear structural analysis : thin-walled structures

This textbook can be divided in two parts: the introductory theoretical part which includes the material from chapters 1 to 5, and the practical part which includes chapters 6 to 16. In the introductory part, basic concepts which were not given enough attention in the course Strength of materials I and II, are elaborated more thoroughly. Chapter 1 covers the index notation and the definition of scalars, vectors and tensors. Chapters 2 and 3 deal with the triaxial state of stress and strain, including the differential equilibrium equations and strain compatibility. The fourth chapter is devoted to constitutive equations, particularly to Hooke's law for isotropic and orthotropic materials, including engineering elastic constants and their transformation. This is necessary for the analysis of orthotropic laminated plates and shells. Plane theory of elasticity is treated with particular attention. Some practical important and theoretically interesting problems which cannot be solved by the methods of the strength of materials are elaborated here. Solutions of the theory of elasticity and solutions of the elementary strength of materials are compared. Emphasis is given to the accuracy and errors of solutions of the strength of materials and the limitations of employing these solutions are presented. The practical part mainly deals with surface structures: plates and shells, but it also deals with the problem of free torsion of noncircular bars, having solid as well as thin-walled open and hollow sections. In addition, chapter seven deals with the problem of circular rings bending. An analysis of displacement, stress and strain was carried out strictly in the linear-elastic area of material behavior.
