Skills and knowledge about medical informatics among medical students

Objectives. To determine how medical students self assess their skills in computer use, knowledge of informatics, and how they recognise importance of informatics in medicine regarding to attendance of Medical Informatics (MI) classes, place of studying, possession of personal computer and recognition of importance of e-mail. Subjects and methods. Research included 395 third year medical students from all four Medical schools in Croatia. Medical students self assessed their skills in computer use, informatics knowledge and importance of MI in medicine using five-grade Lickert scale. Results. The average grade for skills is 3, 39, for knowledge 2, 69 and for importance of MI in medicine is 3, 79. There is no difference in self assessment of skills, informatics knowledge and importance of MI in medicine regarding to attendance of MI classes. Male students self asses their skills in computer use (p<0, 001) and informatics knowledge (p<0, 001) considerably higher than female students. Examinees that consider e-mail communication equal to other means of communication attach much higher importance to MI in medicine (p<0, 001). Conclusion. Medical students self assess their skills higher than knowledge, while awareness about importance of MI in medicine is high and independent to skills and knowledge. It is important not to neglect knowledge of informatics in regard to skills of computer use while teaching medical informatics.
