Offshore dDilling Wastes Management and EU Regulations
The process of drilling oil and gas wells generates waste fluids and drill cuttings. Offshore operators have employed a variety of methods for managing these drilling wastes. Typical waste management options include offshore discharge, underground well injection, and transport back to shore for disposal (onshore treatment, disposal and reuse). Choice of waste management options typically considers local regulations, environmental assessment and cost/benefit analysis. Current regulatory controls minimize the impacts of permitted discharges of cuttings. The different drilling fluids, available waste disposal options, legislations concerning offshore platform discharges, and EU discharge standards for the offshore oil and gas industry, are presented in this paper.
