PHOTOCHEMISTRY OF C-NITROSO COMPOUNDS IN MICELLAR AND WATER MEDIUM
C-nitroso compounds appear as dimers at low temperature. Such dimers can decompose to monomers photolytically. Monomers can in the solid state dimerize by a simple thermal process. Therefore, such chemical systems can be used as a chemical “ off-on” switch in the possible development of intelligent materials. In this work we present the conversion of monomers to dimers in solution at the room temperature. The dimerization reaction is performed in the micellar water solution. We discovered here that anionic SDS micelles dissolved in water above the critical micellar concentration (cmc) encapsulate differently substitued nitrosobenzenes in monomer form. Irradiation of monomers in the SDS micelles by UV light at the room temperature causes their dimerization. We also describe photodimerization of the simple substituited nitrosobenzenes in pure water at the room temperature. All changes were followed by UV-VIS spectroscopy. For comparison, experiments were performed also in cationic CTAB micelles.
