Penological Rehabilitation for Male and Female Murder Perpetrators

One of the essential elements of the modern penal system is the classification according to biological, psychological and social characteristics of the convict, as well as according to the type of offense and the type and degree of sentence. Success of penological rehabilitation as a process and goal includes individualization, that is, treatment differentiation. Criminological and penal significance of the type of the crime committed is an undeniable scientific fact, which refers to the gender of the convict as well. The goal of this study is to determine the differences in penal treatment between male and female murder perpetrators. The sample consist of 492 murder perpetrators (M=383, F=109) who served their prison sentence in the period between 1980 and 1995. The results of discriminative analysis indicate that there statistically significant differences in penal treatment between male and female murder perpetrators; treatment for female perpetrators being more favorable, referring primarily to the system of privileges. There has been no established significant difference in disciplinary procedures, specific forms of behavior in a penal institution and prognosis for success of penal rehabilitation. In general, results indicate that there are no differential penal rehabilitation programs.
