Causes of pheasant chick mortality during the first month of pen-breeding
During the May and June 2004 we have recorded a total of 1544 dead pheasant chicks. According to months, 755 cases of death were recorded in May and 789 in June. Majority of losses were caused by suffocation and traumatic injuries, influenced mainly by environmental conditions in warm batteries. A slight increase in mortality was observed for second group (June) and can be explained by longer storage of eggs and increased possibility of infection through contaminated objects. We further discuss the measures of breeding improvement in order to keep losses at minimum.
